This is the beginning of my dust collector upgrade project. The Harbor Freight dust collector has been modified and upgraded numerous times across the web and I think I could also benefit from some of the upgrades. The idea is to upgrade the impeller, filter and even convert the stock unit to a two stage unit. These upgrades should increase the air flow and therefore also increase the draw at the hose end.
So the first thing to check is the amperage draw using the stock impeller. I’m doing this to get a baseline reading and to make sure I don’t over run the circuit breaker.
So the stock amperage draw is between 9.27 and 9.66 amps. I also want to take a note of the stock air flow at the collector.
The next thing is to get the new impeller installed.. I ordered an impeller from WEN, its a stock replacement for the Harbor freight unit, just larger. It took a while to get one of these delivered from WEN, since it was during the pandemic and they were out of stock, nonetheless it finally arrived.
